Section 1 — Checklist for Canadian Citizenship

Check each item as you gather documents. These checkboxes are for your tracking only and do not affect application submission.

All pages of all passports (current and expired, for the last 5 years) Include all passports held in the last 5 years — both valid and expired. Provide photocopies of every page, including the cover and the page with your photograph and personal information.
Two (2) pieces of government-issued photo identification Examples: driver's licence, provincial health card, senior's identification card, federal employee card. Both pieces must clearly show your full legal name.
Two (2) identical colour photographs meeting application photograph specifications Write your first and last name and date of birth on the back of both photos. See Section 3 for full photo requirements.
Legal name change documents (if applicable) Provide if your legal name has changed due to: marriage, divorce, civil union, dissolution of civil union, common-law registration, court-ordered name change, or any other reason. Provide documentation for each name change.
Long-form birth certificate (front and back) Must include the full legal names of both parents. Short-form or wallet-size certificates are not acceptable. Provide a certified copy issued by the relevant vital statistics authority.
Proof that at least one parent is or was a Canadian citizen Examples: parent's Canadian birth certificate, Canadian citizenship certificate, or naturalization certificate. Complete Section 2.2 (Ancestor / Family Tree) with relevant details for the qualifying parent.

Section 3 — Instructions for Photo Requirements

Read-only reference section. These instructions reproduce the official photo specifications for the Proof of Citizenship application. Do not submit digital photographs — printed photos are required.

Quantity & Format

You must provide 2 identical colour (printed) photographs.
Photos must be professionally printed on high-quality photo paper.
Digital photographs are not accepted.
Both photos must be identical — taken in the same session.

Dimensions

Photo size: 50 mm × 70 mm (width × height).
Face height (chin to crown of head): 31 mm – 36 mm.
Head must be centred in the frame.
Head must occupy between 44% and 51% of the photo height.

Image Quality

Sharp, in focus, with no blurring.
Uniform lighting — no shadows on face or background.
No glare or flash reflections on glasses (or remove glasses).
Natural, neutral skin tones — no filters or alterations.
Plain white or off-white background only.
Taken within the last 6 months.

Expression & Appearance

Neutral facial expression, mouth closed.
Eyes open and clearly visible.
Looking directly at the camera.
No hats, head coverings, or sunglasses (religious/medical exemptions apply — contact IRCC).
No uniforms or camouflage clothing.

Information to Write on the Back of Each Photo

Applicant's first and last name.
Name and complete address of the photographer or photography studio.
Date the photo was taken (month, day, year).

⚠ Write lightly on the back of photos with a soft pencil or felt-tip pen. Do not use a ballpoint pen as it may damage or distort the photo.
